Read up on greyhounds
The questions every new adopter asks, answered straight from our FAQ — plus the books and communities we point people to. Skim by topic, or read it all.
Greyhound basics
- How much do they weigh? Males typically 65–70 lbs, females 60–65 lbs (AKC). A greyhound can look “thin” at a perfectly healthy weight.
- How tall are they? Males 28–30 inches at the shoulder; females 27–28 inches.
- How long do they live? Typically 10–13 years — one Oklahoma greyhound made it to 19.
- What colors do they come in? 18 official colors — blue (grey), brindle, fawn, red, white, black, ticked. Color says nothing about personality or health; choose on temperament, not looks.
- Can they handle Indiana winters? Yes — with coats, booties, and snoods. Our foster network can point you to the right cold-weather gear.
- What’s a lurcher? A sighthound cross — greyhounds, whippets, or borzois mixed with working or scent-hound breeds. Often smaller, sometimes higher-energy; every bit as greyt.

How adoption works
Four steps to a greyhound
Application, meet and greet, home visit, adoption day. The home visit can be virtual or in person, and the adoption fee helps cover medical and fostering costs. New to greyhounds? We place within about three hours of Goshen so we can support you. Experienced sighthound home with a local greyhound group nearby? We now place beyond the radius too. Either way, we never ship dogs — every adoption starts in person.
