The Newbold family’s heartwarming journey with their greyhound, Buddy, shows the unexpected joy of adopting a retired racer.
An Instant Connection
After losing their beloved Louie, the Newbolds were unsure about adopting another dog. Eight months later, a spontaneous visit to a Greyt Angels meet-and-greet changed everything. Cameron, initially hesitant, instantly connected with Buddy, a shy greyhound with a striking red brindle coat.
Following the passing of our beloved Louie, the Newbold family was unsure of if and when to add another four legged member to our busy household. It was in eight months since Louie left us that we decided it was time to seek our next companion. Little did we know that it would lead us to fall in love with a handsome and shy recently retired racing greyhound, Buddy.
Cameron was the most resistant member of the family when it came to adding a dog but all it took was one visit to a “Meet and Greet” event sponsored by Greyt Angels at Petco in Goshen. She immediately found Buddy, standing off by himself. His red brindle coat and proud stance made him stand out but it was his warm heart that won us over. He welcomed the attention we gave him and leaned against Cameron’s legs for comfort. After a brief family conversation, we applied to adopt Buddy. One week later, he arrived at our home and it is hard to imagine life without him.
Welcoming Buddy Home
Buddy quickly became part of the family. His gentle nature and affectionate demeanor won everyone over. Within a week, Buddy was home, and the Newbolds couldn't imagine life without him.
Buddy's New Life
Now retired from racing, Buddy enjoys a relaxed lifestyle. From morning walks with Ken to "rooing" at passing vehicles, he brings endless joy and smiles. Buddy finds happiness in simple pleasures, like napping in sunbeams or exploring the neighborhood in his winter jacket.
Buddy is thoroughly enjoying his life of relaxing now that his racing days are over. He has provided our family with endless smiles and joy. From early morning walks with Ken to practicing down dog yoga poses with Corynne to “rooing” at the passing emergency vehicles, Buddy is a consistent force in our lives. He is most active whenever there is a chance he can snag a snack but spends most of his time stretched out in the living room. Buddy likes to find any ray of sunshine he can so he can take a snooze. It’s hard to imagine that he was once running on a track in Alabama as he now wears a jacket to explore the neighborhood during cold Indiana winters but he fits in wherever he is.
A Perfect Fit
Buddy's presence unites the family, providing comfort and laughter. His friendly nature makes him a hit with visitors, and he's always eager for a road trip or adventure. The Newbolds are grateful for the joy Buddy brings and cherish every moment with him.
Our family is so grateful for the laughter he brings, ability to bring us all together despite hectic days and comfort he provides when we need it most. We did not set out to adopt a greyhound but it is safe to say, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Buddy is really the perfect dog for us and we are so happy to have him in our lives. He is a willing travel companion when it’s time to take a road trip to visit family and always seems up for any adventure. We always have to keep an eye on him when we are hosting friends as he is quick to help himself to any food we have but he welcomes everyone into our home. He loves to meet new people and is a quick friend to everyone, as his name implies.
Thanks to Greyt Angels

We are glad to have worked with Greyt Angels as they have opened our hearts to Buddy. The joy he has brought is immeasurable and we would not have him in our lives if it were not for the awesome work the volunteers of Greyt Angels does to provide a new life for retired greyhounds. Buddy is pure joy and we look forward to making new memories with him.
Thank you, Newbold family, for sharing Buddy’s incredible journey with us.
